The Linux ham radio logging software is feature-rich and free. You can even modify the code if you feel like it!
Here are a few ham radio logging applications that Linux offers. They are available with most distributions. I have the Ubuntu distribution of Linux running on a laptop in the shack.

XLOG
Ham Radio Logging Software
GTK+ Logging program for ham radio operators.
XLOG is a logging program for amateur radio operators which can be used for daily logging and contests. Logs are stored into a text file. QSO's are presented in a list. Items in the list can be added, deleted or updated. For each contact, DXCC information is displayed and bearings and distance are calculated, both short and long path.
When hamlib is enabled through the menu, you can retrieve frequency, mode and signal-strength from your rig over the serial port.
You will find XLOG in the Ham Radio Packages for your particular Linux distribution.
For example, I use Ubuntu Linux. If you also use Ubuntu then ...
- Click on the Ubuntu Software Center (USC) button.
- Look for XLOG in the USC using the search box in the top right hand corner of the USC window.
- The link to the XLOG package will be displayed.
- Click on the Install button of the XLOG package
- The XLOG application and XLOG-data will be installed.
On the other hand, if you use a (generic) Debian Linux distribution, you will find the latest XLOG version for Debian at:
http://packages.debian.org/stable/hamradio/xlog
XLOG-Data
The XLOG-data package for Ubuntu Linux is installed at the same time as the application. It contains the manual, locale files, pixmaps and more for XLOG.
TWLOG
Day-to-day logging program for ham radio operators.
This GUI (graphic user interface) program records basic Ham log information. It is for day to day logging, not contesting.
There is no dup checking and contest related things like that. The interface can be customized without re-compiling. A resource file allows you to modify the menus for the bands, modes, etc. that you use.
Most of the log entries can be made with a button press or a single key stroke.
TWLOG records the date, start and end times, call sign, band, mode, power, and signal reports. There is also a field for general notes.
A second window allows you to search and edit the log file, and a third window provides online help. The help file can also be viewed with any unix command or editor at any time.
TQSL
Trustedqsl is a QSL log signing for the Logbook of the World (LoTW). (For newbies ... a QSL is a confirmation of contact between two amateur radio stations).
The ARRL Logbook of the World project is a database which collects data about contacts between amateur stations (QSOs).
The TQSQL software package provides programs for maintaining your digital certificates for LoTW and for signing QSO log files in ADIF and Cabrillo format for upload.
Try Them!
It will cost you nothing to try Linux ham radio logging software. One application is sure to meet your requirements. If not ... modify one to fit! :-)
Or, if you not know how to modify them, ask the author if s/he would consider incorporating your mods in the next version.

PZTLog came about because I wanted an easy-to-use logging application with simple/quick entry of various QSO fields plus the ability to export the data into a mapping format.
Whether you want a simple QSO logger for the odd bit of HF DX or VHF “square-bashing”, or an everyday logger with Stats, PSK/RTTY modes, eQSL uploading and simple Contest dupe/serial-number integration – PZTLog may be just what you’re looking for.
PZTLog serves as a general-purpose logger (whether live or typing-up later) for ragchews as well as helping me keep track of contest QSOs on HF/VHF. There’s built-in PSK31 (and 63/125) + RTTY Datamodes, QRZ.com XML lookup, GoogleMaps KML output (eg: display QSOs in Google Earth), ADIF export, eQSL upload, DX Spot database with archive facility, CQ Voice Keyer, Contest “dupe-checking”, WSJT-X viewer and more. The software can run over a network, such as a multiband contest with a shared log and dupe/new-band alerts.
There are 2 “modes” that you can run PZTLog in: Full Mode offers a single-window with all of the log/cluster/datamode functions whilst Simple Mode offers a “windows” feature with a low-profile logger and optional Datamodes, DX Cluster and Log Viewer windows which can be moved/sized accordingly.

Ham Radio Logging Software Mac
Despite the variety of features, PZTLog is easy-to-use and great for Club-events as an alternative to paper logging. The Flexi-Input allows for rapid-entry of QSO details so great for single-op working or even the non-computer-literate! You are given Logbook Entry, LogView, DX Cluster and Datamodes in a single window. A separate Log Viewer window is also available. This caters for most requirements, screen resolutions as well as operating preferences.
PZTLog Downloads
This software is free to use and offered here on the basis that you may find it useful – I am not in a position to provide support for it at this time. The software works best when installed to C:PZTLog. Some of my programs have their main EXE file compressed which can cause enthusiastic virus scanners to complain.
If upgrading from an existing install of PZTLog, you are advised to keep a spare copy of your PZTLog.exe , PZTLog.ini (settings) and Log.mdb (logbook file, or whatever you have called it)
Download PZTLog v1.43 Setup.exe
This can be used by new and existing users – Simply run the installer (as Administrator) and enjoy. Your existing settings+logbook will remain in place.
CAT Control : Requires OmniRig – download from here… OmniRig test client
(if you can’t get any CAT functions from PZTLog, try the test client software to verify CAT connectivity)
CW Keyer : Requires CWType – download from here
PZTLog Simple Mode – Logbook Entry
Datamodes Skimmer – 5 additional channels of PSK/RTTY decoding
Supports “click and log” so ideal for simple split operating
